Most people are unaware of the fundamentals of nutrition. It is not uncommon for people to confuse fats, proteins and carbohydrates. Nutritional counseling aims to impart basic facts concerning nutrition and the nutritional value of foods.
WeightWise dietitians work with you to assess the growth of your nutritional knowledge so you have the tools necessary to succeed in maintaining your weight loss for life. Members are taught to classify foods in three major categories of nutrient density:
- Foods with low caloric density and high nutritional value
- Foods with medium nutritional value and caloric density
- Foods that are high in caloric density and nutrient poor
Trips to the supermarket will be arranged to demonstrate appropriate shopping. Cooking suggestions and demonstrations will also take place to teach more healthy ways to prepare foods. In addition, we help you with creative menus to accommodate your families' ethnic and cultural food preferences.
Diets clearly are not effective in the long term. It is important to appreciate each individual's food preferences. Our motto for nutrition is to "reduce but not eliminate." Elimination of foods leads to resentment and possibly further negative self worth. It is clear that decreasing portion size results in modest reductions in caloric intake and is more effective in sustaining weight loss over a long period of time.
In order for dietitians to create a well-balanced plan for our surgical patients, they will review your clinical pre-operative evaluation and perform one of their own. Our dietitians' roles will change as you continue your journey through the surgical process. The roles include:
Keep in mind, pre- and post-operative diets differ from program to program and surgeon to surgeon. WeightWise uses an integrated approach focused around the expertise of our dietitians and surgeons to individualize the pre-operative and post-operative diet to meet the needs of the member.
